Cilia Device for Microfluid Manipulation

چکیده
This paper presents bio-mimetic cilia resonated in a microfluidic device for fluid transport and bio-compatible mixing. High aspect ratio silicone cilia structures were successfully fabricated and assembled in a fluidic device by the recently developed under-water fabrication method. The cilia in a fluid were resonated by piezoinduced actuation. As an application of the cilia, a fluorophoric avidin-biotin binding assay was performed in a microfluidic well, resulting in 1000-fold enhancement of the sensitivity.

Distributed manipulation experiments were performed using a massively-parallel, microfabricated actuator array. An organic ciliary array of thin-lm polyimide bi-morph microactuators exploiting combined thermal and electrostatic control was employed to implement task-level, sensorless manipulation strategies for macro-scopic objects. The tasks of parts-translation,-rotation,-orientation, and-cen...
متن کاملNarrowing Microfluid Width In Microchannel Using Air Boundaries
A novel method for narrowing microfluid width in microchannel is presented by utilizing of air boundaries of which inflation direction is perpendicular to microfluid flow. The air boundaries are generated by heating water with microheater. The microfluid width of 300 pm can be focused and maintained as up to 22 pm which is near cell size without affecting cell or microchannel structure. The nar...
متن کاملFabrication and Manipulation of Ciliary Microrobots with Non-reciprocal Magnetic Actuation
Magnetically actuated ciliary microrobots were designed, fabricated, and manipulated to mimic cilia-based microorganisms such as paramecia. Full three-dimensional (3D) microrobot structures were fabricated using 3D laser lithography to form a polymer base structure. A nickel/titanium bilayer was sputtered onto the cilia part of the microrobot to ensure magnetic actuation and biocompatibility. T...
متن کاملStudies in Particle Sorting by Paramecium Cilia Arrays
Motile cilia are cell-surface organelles whose purposes, in ciliated protists and certain ciliated vertebrate epithelia, include generating fluid flow, chemosensation, mechanosensation and substance uptake. Certain properties of cilia arrays, such as beating synchronisation and manipulation of external proximate particulate matter, are considered emergent, but remain incompletely characterised ...
